PhD POSITION IN PHYSICAL METALLURGY/MATERIAL PHYSICS – Controlling Recrystallization and Texture in Aluminium Alloys
We are searching for a new PhD candidate with a university degree (Master of Science or equivalent) in materials science and engineering, metallurgy, physics or equivalent, who has a background within physical metallurgy and/or material physics. The subject of the thesis is related to advanced characterization and modelling of recrystallization and texture in aluminium alloys. The PhD work will involve in-situ scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) methodology development and characterization as basis for calibration and further development of models for sub-grain growth/recovery and nucleation and growth of recrystallization in aluminium alloys. It is a requirement that the candidate has hands-on experience with SEM and/or TEM and preferably also some experience with mathematical/numerical modelling and simulations. The PhD project is a collaboration project between Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Department of Physics and will make use of the national TEM infrastructure NORTEM.
This PhD project is related to the NTNU Aluminium Product Innovation Center (NAPIC), a newly established collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering Science (IVT), Faculty of Natural Sciences (NV) and Faculty of Architecture and Design (AD), with Department of Engineering Design and Materials (IPM), IVT, as the hos. Its overall aim is to explore new product opportunities in aluminium by employing a research-driven innovation approach. Basis funding is provided by Norsk Hydro, a network of metal manufacturing companies and the three faculties in terms of PhD positions (of which this is one). Its operational basis will be cross-disciplinary collaboration between product design and development, manufacturing, materials technology and product applications. The vision of the center is to become a world leader in research-driven aluminium product innovation.
